The idea of establishing scientific research and educational institute specialized in the field of metallurgical industries was born in the start of Egypt entering the field of heavy industries, with the iron and Steel industry at its core. The main objective of the project was to prepare a generation of specialists of engineers and technologists with competence and technical expertise in the production and development processes.

To achieve this goal, the state at that time turned towards the countries with outstanding expertise in this field in order to help establish an entity capable of providing the developing industry with the necessary qualified cadres. A contract was concluded with the Soviet Union on 14/9/1967 “Contract No. 2575/5”, in which the Soviet Union undertook the necessary studies to establish Tabbin Institute for Metallurgical Studies (TIMS), in the light of foundations followed in similar institutes in USSR commensurate with our local conditions and the objectives set for this institute.

The formulated vision of TIMS for enhancing the national industry sector was to provide post graduate higher education for Diploma and Master degree studies, in addition to continuing education and specialized training programs for technical staff in metallurgical & mining engineering industries and community serves.

The mission of TIMS was providing innovative professional skills courses for Master and research students, taking into account the changing needs of the employers as an umbrella through which to lay the foundation of improvement and continuous development.

Throughout long experience for more than half a century, TIMS has developed broad technical capabilities, in depth knowledge base allowing it to offer various post graduate higher education degrees and specialized professional training programs in the field of metallurgical and material engineering, energy conservation and environment protection. In addition, TIMS carried out broad spectrum of technical consultancy and investigation support in specialized industrial studies, energy conservation & environment protection, material selection & failure analysis of equipment and machine parts for several industrial sectors such as; metallurgical industries, petroleum & natural gas production, chemical & petrochemical industries, cement & building materials and other engineering industries.

With its wide scope of various specialized degrees, applied industrial studies & research, training programs and technical services to the Egyptian industry community, TIMS is one of the indicators of scientific progress and industry advancement in different fields, which represents the cornerstone of sustainable development.

My previous experience as a director of Central Metallurgical Research & Development Institute CMRDI, added to TIMS long experience and cooperation with similar international scientific institutions will help us to develop TIMS towards new horizon of serving the Egyptian and international industrial communities in the fields of research and education.
